Work Illness Cert

Your employer may require you to provide a separate medical certificate ('sick note/work cert' from your GP) when you are on sick leave. For example, you may have to provide a medical certificate if you are out sick for more than 2 or 3 consecutive days.

Social Welfare Illness Benefit – Important Information

If you are unable to work due to illness, you may be entitled to Illness Benefit from the Department of Social Protection (DSP).

To begin your claim, you must attend an in-person consultation with your GP, who will complete a ‘Certificate of Incapacity for Work’. This certificate cannot be issued without a face-to-face appointment, as per DSP guidelines.

Please note: The only exception to this requirement is if you are currently an inpatient in hospital. In that case, we will require a letter from your hospital consultant confirming your admission status.

Your GP will submit the certificate electronically to the Department via a secure online system. In some cases, a single certificate may cover the entire duration of your illness. If not, you may need to return for follow-up assessments and further certification.

Once your certificate has been issued, you must open your Illness Benefit claim online with the Department of Social Protection. You can do so here.
